Bull Shark Diving in Playa del Carmen
The best time to SCUBA dive with Bull Sharks in Playa del Carmen is from November until the beginning of March. During the winter months the water temperature cools down and pregnant female bull sharks arrive in Playa del Carmen where they spend the winter before moving on.
Many people ask us “is it safe to dive with Bull Sharks?” and the simple answer is “yes it is”. We have been diving with Bull Sharks for more than 10 years and have never once had an incident.
About Bull Sharks
Scuba Libre is the best option for you if you want to live an experience of a lifetime and come face to face with 10 or more beautiful Bull Sharks. Playa del Carmen is actually becoming one of the best places in the world to dive with Bull Sharks.
You may be surprised to know that Bull Sharks are not murderous monsters roaming the shallows. In fact they are so timid that the only way we guarantee our guests close encounters is by attracting them with bait, which also makes for excellent photo opportunities.
The aggregation of bull sharks in Playa del Carmen is the only know aggregation in the entire Riviera Maya. These pregnant female bull sharks represent an incredibly important sub-population of sharks as they are literally the link to the next generation of bull sharks.
The Dive Site
The dive site is located literally just a few minutes away from the beach by boat. The dive site has a maximum depth of 24m or 72 feet. The encounters take place on a beautiful white sand bottom which is once again excellent for photography as there is lots of light. Usually there is a slight afternoon current but guests can hold on to a line secured to the sandy bottom, so the dive is not actually physically demanding.
Before guests enter the boat, there is a detailed safety briefing and description of the dive where any questions you have will be answered. The dive group consists of guests, the professional shark-feeder, and 2-3 dive masters who accompany guests throughout the experience for added comfort. The dive will last approximately 60 minutes with 35 minutes of bottom time depending on depth. You can expect to see bull sharks swimming calmly below you as soon as you enter the water (pretty exciting stuff).
Scuba Libre guarantees you close encounters with bull sharks, you’ll literally see 10+ bull sharks just a few metres away from you. You will see how the sharks calmly glide a few feet above the sandy bottom, waiting for their chance to come in and feed. What makes the dive so special is not just how close you will see the sharks but how long you will get to spend with them, it’s an unforgettable experience. You will also get to see the true nature of sharks and hopefully finish the dive with a different perspective on how sharks are viewed in general. Here at Scuba Libre we want you to love sharks as much as we do, so that we can protect them from over-fishing and by extension help promote a healthy marine eco system.
Taking part in this dive isn’t just an opportunity to see an apex predator up close and personal it is directly funding an initiative to help protect bull sharks in Playa del Carmen. A 5 dollar donation can be made to the “save our sharks” initiative which is a project designed to help educate people on why bull sharks are essential to the marine eco system of Playa del Carmen and marine eco systems in general. Shark tourism benefits a wide array of businesses in Playa del Carmen from hotels to restaurants and so on.
This gives bull sharks a collateral value beyond the direct value to dive shops. If local communities view bull sharks as a sustainable source of revenue they will be far less likely to fish them.
This is another reason why all of bull shark dives in Playa del Carmen are baited-dives as this guarantees close encounters with multiple sharks and provides an unforgettable experience.
